My old drum told me it was out of ink back in Dec. I literally needed to print about 5 more pages RIGHT THAT MOMENT for an event that was about to start. I found a way to reset my old one, hoping to squeak out just enough to finish my print job and ordered a new one. I've now printing at least another 200 pages and the ink is still going strong. This one I purchased has been sitting on my desk since the first week of December.
On the upside, these things last FOREVER. I only have to replace the drum every few years, if even.
On the downside, they cost quite a bit, but that's evened out by the fact that they last, again, FOREVER.
On the offside: Seriously? It told me I was out of ink and my printer doesn't have an 'ignore and keep printing' button like (some? all?) inkjet's do. It WOULD NOT print anymore until I fiddled with it and tricked its brain by resetting it. I have since gotten another 200+ sheets out of it. That is a LOT of ink I would have thrown away, and HAVE thrown away in the past! Do yourself a favor: do a search on how to reset your drum. I'm not saying don't buy a new one, but I am saying you may have some time yet before you really need a new one. Your mileage may vary depending on how much you print.
But I really dislike the drum replacement part and the toner replacement part.
As to the drum replacement part - DR420 - I installed it correctly (as I have several times over the years when a drum replacement was needed). This time, however, the "replace drum" light turned back on after I'd printed just 200-300 copies or so, about half a ream of paper!
I took out the drum, shook it up, re-installed it. The light stayed off for awhile. But it came back on.
Now, either the warning light is defective, or the drum replacement part is. But there's no way a replacement drum that costs about $75 can be done, wear out, after less than a ream of paper.
I haven't had the time to track down the cause of this problem. But I'm not happy about it, regardless.
Until I figure out what's wrong with this Brother DR420 Drum Unit, I suggest you consider another part for your Brother printer. Buy a cheaper knock-off part, if you can find one. This one costs far more than it's worth.
Unless you don't mind spending $75 on a drum that will stop working after you print a half a ream of paper.
