5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I went with this over 4k
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 11 May 2023
For context, I am coming from a Dell S2721DGF 27" 1440p 165Hz IPS Freesync/Gsync monitor to this Dell S3422DWG 34" 1440pUW 144Hz VA Freesync monitor.

My plan had been to at some point move from 1440p to 4k once I upgraded from my RX6800, but after seeing some stuff on Ultrawides, I decided that even though it's not really a step up in resolution from 1440p (except side to side), going Ultrawide would make more of a difference for me in games and on the desktop than just an increase in resolution like 4k. Sure, 4k would look sharper, but I'd still be having the same game experience, while with Ultrawide I actually see more on the screen.

1440p Ultrawide is also easier to run than 4k, so that's another benefit, and I don't sit so close to the monitor that I can see any issue with 1440p not being sharp enough.

In any case, as far as the monitor goes, I am very happy with it. I'm not sure I can comment on the VA panel not being as vibrant as my old IPS panel, while I did have the old IPS one configured and just have the VA set to one of the color modes, I am not seeing anything that makes me think, "Man, my old IPS monitor looked better than this..."

As far as ghosting, I haven't noticed any with the monitor set to Super Fast mode, testing in various games (CP2077, Witcher 3, NFS Unbound, SWJ: Survivor, RDR2, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands). I have had to turn down some game settings here and there to try and maintain my FPS, but that is something I knew would happen considering I moved from 2560x1440 to 3440x1440 without making a GPU upgrade.

I am also loving the lack of backlight bleed on the VA panel. When the screen goes dark the black levels are just darker than on my old IPS panel, and when the screen goes dark for loading screens or things like that, I no longer have brighter spots in the corners or edges, it's all uniform. I love that. (not as dark as OLED obviously, but I also don't have to worry about burn in) I included shots of the black uniformity test between the two Dell monitors from Rtings as an example of what I'm talking about.

I also don't have any issues with the viewing angles. Even when I stand off to the side I can still see what's on the monitor fine, and when I sit in front of the monitor as I always do when actually using my computer, I have not seen any issues with poor viewing angles during regular use.

As a whole, the gaming experience does feel more immersive with the wider natural field of view (in some games like SWJ: Survivor I actually had to reduce the FOV settings because it was getting too stretched on the far edges). I am getting used to the monitor's slight curve on the desktop, which I don't see the benefit of for everyday use, but in game I don't notice the curve at all, and for all I know it might actually be helping with the wide view immersion in that situation.

Overall I'm very happy with my decision to go ultrawide with this VA panel, especially since with at least this specific monitor I am not noticing the drawbacks people at times complain about with VA panels with this monitor, ghosting, poor viewing angles and the colors not being as good as IPS. I'm sure if I had a way to measure colors, response times and ghosting and all the other stuff I'd see a difference (I know there is some just by looking at the RTings reviews), but to my eye when in use I see no problems.

Edit (5/7/2023): Okay so after owning this monitor for a week or so, I've found that the flickering issue is still intermittent. Changing the color profile to RTS did not mitigate it, nor is changing it to any other profile (both on the monitor or in the Mac System Settings) . This appears to be a common issue with Apple's M1 chips and 4K external monitors (there are plenty of threads about this). I did not know about this prior to buying this monitor and I could not find a definite solution for this.
I did not have this issue when I had a 2K monitor with my M1 Macbook, both Dell U and S series 27 inch 2k monitor, and a Viotek Ultrawide 2K monitor also.
I'm still debating if I should return this or not and downgrade back to a 2K monitor.
I'm leaving it to 5 stars since it's not the monitor's fault, it's the M1 chip.

Just a few notes/tips:
- I downloaded the BetterDisplay App for the Mac. The license is only $15 and I've applied the license to two separate M1 macbooks with no problem. This allows you to enable native resolution scaling, which helps with the scaled resolution clarity somewhat, along with additional fine tuning configs.
If you don't know, Apple has scaling issues with 4k Monitors, refer to YouTube videos for more info.
- Setting the color profile to Generic RGB Profile really makes the color pop and the darks darker. So making it closer to the Macbook's native color vibrancy. This is set in the System Settings > Displays > Select the Dell S3221QS > Set color Profile to Generic RGB Profile (of course you can try out the other profiles too).
- Setting the response time to 'Extreme' should reduce ghosting (Just found this in some YouTube video)

------ Previous Review ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Sharp display for coding. I’m a software engineer. I initially made a mistake of purchasing a 2K 32 inch monitor. The text was somewhat pixelated, I knew it would cause eventual eye fatigue. Then, I picked this one up and the texts are very sharp even at 3008x1692 resolution (higher than 2k, less than 4K) which offers more screen real estate than 1440p. I’m happy with it.
All I care about is the text sharpness, I don’t play video games nor do I do any kind of video/photo editing, so I can’t comment about the vibrancy and/or color accuracy.

Only con I found is that with the standard preset mode, I saw that the backlight flickers when scrolling rapidly through some webpages. But once I changed it to RTS, it went away. Idk, maybe it’s a specific issue with my monitor (I purchased it used).

Anyways, no regrets. And to think I was considering picking up the Apple Studio display. Definitely saved me some funds 👌🏽
