To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we do not use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
My main problem with that the only kids who will want to play this are toddlers and preschoolers, and that age group does not handle multiple bad things happening very well. Out of 10 options on the wheel that tells you what to do on your turn, three of them will make a kid sad and one of those involved outing back everything you've gained and starting over again. You can imagine how well that goes over with a toddler. I think it's good to have at least one bad outcome because it helps kids realize things don't always go perfectly. However, in addition to having the start over option, and one official miss-your-turn option, every time you get a color you already have, you essentially miss your turn as well so the longer the game goes the more likely it is that your child will skip multiple turns and because the closer you get to winning, the slower the game goes, it also makes it more likely that you will get the put-everything-back option and have to start over again. Obviously, you can just make your own rules and ignore anything unpleasant but then it's not really a game, it's just a toy for your kids to do whatever they want with. That said, my kids do enjoy the cute acorns and putting them in the holes with or without the game and it does help with learning colors so it wasn't a total waste. I just don't feel it's a very well-thought-out game for the intended audience.
Got this for $6 on prime day, so my evaluation is with that price in mind.
The game pieces are cute, and I do really think it’s a nice introduction to colors and fine motor kills. My toddler loves snacky squirrel and uses him as a toy...LOL.
But the gameplay is a little too basic and meh, and I’m also not sure I’m happy with the whole “stealing acorns from your sibling” factor. Seems there should be a better way to have fun, that doesn’t involve teaching that it’s okay to take from others pockets in order to get ahead. If I would have realized that was part of the gameplay I probably would have passed on this.
Excellent game for a toddler/preschooler. I am a pediatric OT and love this game. I love that they incorporate "tongs" in the play of the game. I usually buy this for a child who is 2 1/2-3. It's usually one of their first games. The best part about this game is it holds up over time. You can easily have a 8-10 year old play and still be entertained. It is along the lines of a "Hi-Ho-Cheerio" but is better since it helps develop muscles of the hand needed for coloring, writing, and feeding.
I am giving this game only three stars because I think it is too simple, and is actually boring for my grandson who just turned four years old. It might be better for a three-year-old (or younger). There is not much of a game to it. You just spin the wheel, it points to a color, you pick up the acorn that matches the color on the wheel, and put the acorn in your "tree." Whoever fills the five spaces in your tree with acorns first, wins.
I think it is a cute game and would be good to teach a younger child the basics of game play: how to take turns, how to skip a turn, how to spin a wheel, and how to match colors.
We will put this game away for a few years, and will introduce it to my younger grandchild earlier than four years.
In summary: It's a cute game but not suited to even a four year old, let alone a seven year old.
This game is excellent for teaching kids colors and (to a much lesser degree) numbers. There is also a little bit of strategy in deciding who to steal an acorn from when the spinner lands on the robber.
The game consists of a log with colored rings that match colored acorns. The goal of the game is to fill your log with one of each color acorn in order to win. A spinning wheel dictates what color acorn you may choose by either directly landing on a color, landing on a wild spot that lets you choose your color, a wild spot that lets you choose 2 acorns, a robber which lets you steal an acorn from another player, or a storm that blows all of your acorns away.
While we really like this game, there are a couple of things to be aware of:
First, the game comes with a set of squirrel-shaped "tweezers" to pick up the acorns with. There is only one set so, if you are using them, you will need a lot of patients as the kids struggle to pick up acorns and place them before passing the squirrel to the next player.
Next, this is a competitive game. If you are playing with kids that are competitive by nature, you may find the game getting heated as acorns get blown away or stolen. In my opinion, this makes for a great teaching opportunity...
Finally, the acorns are small and rubber. This presents a choking hazard for smaller kids who tend to put things in their mouths. Our 2-year-old understands how to play and loves this game. At first, though, we really had to watch him to make sure he wasn't chewing on the acorns.
This is our 3.8-year-old's first board game, and it's perfect for his age. He's old enough to understand and follow the rules immediately upon explanation, and young enough to find the game very intriguing. The box is bigger than I imagined and of good quality, as is everything else. I especially appreciate that the acorns are made of grabby material which helps little hands to use the squirrel to pick them up. Some reviews said that their spinning wheel came folded/not working, and I imagine that would be a big problem. Fortunately ours came intact. Overly I'm very impressed by both the design and quality of this little game.
My 3 year old asks to play this with me regularly, and my 6 yo occasionally asks to play as well. Pros: - I love that the "board" is actually the box - the parts all seem durable - the acorns are a little sticky due to the rubbery material, which makes them easier to handle - games are short - teaches counting to 2, colors, fine motor skills, turn taking
Cons - the squirrel tweezers are a little hard to figure out for little fingers - can get boring for the parent
4 children and 20+ years of being a parent, cutest game I've ever seen. Not only high quality pieces, great for hand eye coordination, counting, colors, taking turns, sportsmanship. (Being happy for other players who win or have a great turn.) I honestly can not imagine why anyone would or even could give this game a bad review. Not to mention the price point it phenomenonal! $10- $15 !?! I've paid double that for a family game that consisted of just cards. FANTASTIC GAME!!! I'm headed over to buy all of the other games in the set!
