I purchased the Charge5 because I prefer the Fitbit app to others, as it has just enough detail to keep you involved, but not so much that you become overwhelmed. The autotracking is also a nice feature to have. I have an Alta HR, but as it does not have GPS, I could not upload to Strava. Seeing the Charg5 had GPS, I thought this would be the solution. Unfortunately this was far from the case. Overall the Charg5 works well for all the other features, aside GPS. GPS fails almost at every instance. In the end, while I had the Charge5, I'd simply started to use the Strava app on my iPhone for GPS tracking, and that worked nearly flawlessly. In the end, aside from a nicer graphic user interface, the Charge5 offered me no benefit over using my Alta HR (screen no longer working) and a third party app such as Strava.
On the user side, I didn't need notifications, but even if you turn them completely off, you cannot remove or move the notifications screen on the device, which occupies the first swipe right position. Leaving the exercise screen as the 3rd over. It would make much more sense that exercise would be one screen away from the main. Also, when pausing an exercise, it's all too easy to stop the exercise than resume it. It takes a while to learn to gently nudge the screen to avoid that.
Fitbit customer service were responsive to trying to help. But in the end, could not resolve the GPS issues, even when they replace the unit for a new one. AS a final gesture, they offers to again exchange it, or give me 50% off a different unit. But neither of these options makes sense, especially the discount offer, as it would result in my current unit no longer functioning or lacking any future support. The net result of that would be the money I'd spent on the Charge5 would go to waste, and I'd in the end be paying nearly 100% of the price of a Versa 4 for example, despite their 50% offer. Had my Charge5 been able to continue to function after upgrading, I may have taken them up on the offer.
In the end, through long dialogue, Amazon has agreed to let me return the item for a refund.
I wish we could have resilved the GPS issues, but in this respect, the Charge5 was more frustrating to use, than not to use.
