Perfect sequel to Zelda Breath of The Wild. Link has several new abilities (will list later) to play around with

World is more expansive: There’s the Great Plateau (old Breath of the Wild map) with slightly altered environments due to gloom infection, the sky city, and the depths (huge underground cave network below hyrule). Smoke and highlighted light pillars shows points of interest in the overworld without having to look at the map

Weapon durability is back. I know some people don’t like breakable items/weapons, but it teaches kids to be more adaptable rather than have constant/sustainable gains all the time. Also helps them be more creative in the fusing items together. Items are less scarce this time around giving you more opportunities to experiment with new combinations

Still have freedom to be creative and do what you want. Can think of creative ways to cheat the puzzle with new abilities instead of the intended way of doing it, making the experience your own. Gives you the ‘I don’t think we are supposed to do that, but it worked!’ moments

Temples return. Each one have a companion character which grants you special abilities for that temple/dungeon. Bosses at end of temples are really powerful and not just simple advanced moving puzzles

-Menu/UI is more streamline.

Inventory tabs can be changed via L1 R1 trigger instead of thumbstick. No need to go through multiple pages to get to the next tab. Instead you scroll down if you have a lot of items

Settings is at the end of inventory tab instead of a separate page

Able to view recipes on sub menu for each item

-Story/Plot:

Link and Zelda is exploring a unknown area under hyrule castle. They accidentally awaken an mummy and he uses gloom ability to attack them. Link arm and master sword gets infected during initial battle, and the mummy released gloom infecting hyrule. There’s a huge quake and Link both get separated during the scuffle. You wake up and go on a quest to find Zelda, re-forge the master sword and save hyrule.

Story is the most expansive than any other Zelda title focusing a lot of character development

Like Breath of the Wild; there’s limited voice acting and not fully voiced. But that doesn’t detract from the experience

--- Abilities

1. Ultra Hand

Use this to lift large heavy object and fuse them together. Can use it to solve puzzles lifting heavy objects to build bridges, ramps, ladders, etc) but also use as a vehicle creator for traversal. It’s very similar to Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts vehicle creator. Vehicles you create use fuel/battery to operate, collecting/using zonai charges refuels your vehicle giving you the ability to travel longer distances especially when creating gliders. You can also upgrade maximum battery as you progress through he game. Note that our creation despawns if you’re too far away from it, so best not abandon it

2. Merge items

Fuse any two items together in inventory. Mainly use to create weapons with different properties (higher attack, range, elemental damage etc) and increase durability. Seeing weapon durability is back gives players ways to experiment and be resourceful with what they have in their inventory

During combat you’re able to able to throw individual items

3. Asend
Able to teleport to above flat platform when directly under it. Some areas are restricted if it’s too high. The cursor on your screen when using ability turns green to indicate if it’s possible to ascend or not

4. Recall

Rewind time for a brief second. Great for puzzle solving like climbing up a rock that fell off the cliff and rewind time to ride it up

5. Auto build

Able to re-create previous creations you made with ultra-hand. Just have all items in one spot and use ability to re-create it instead of starting from scratch

6. Amiibo

Similar to last game, you can in amiibo daily and items will fall in front of you. Amiibo give armor skins, fabrics, and other common items. No exclusive content from Amiibos this time. Able to obtain them via quests. Scanning amiibos just give you them early and more items daily. Disappointed the wolf link amiibo doesn’t give you wolf companion like the last game

7. Camera

Basically an ability to take pictures to fill out the hyrule compendium

Overall extremely fun game giving you freedom to explore and be creative. Best Legend of Zelda game to date.

Close to Greatness but It's Ultrahand Can't Quite Grasp It

Right off the bat I want to say this is an ambitious game, it's massive...to a fault. Just like it's predecessor, Breath of The Wild, Tears of The Kingdom has excessively large areas to explore where there's not always anything interesting going on and makes traversing a chore at times. Mostly everything is back from the original BOTW, the good and the bad. Weapons that break after a few hits; cumbersome menus; exploring over a hundred puzzle and combat focused shrines to get Stamina or Health upgrades. Stamina is slightly less of an issue because of new abilities such as Ascend which allows the player to climb through any ceiling to the top of any structure that has a flat surface. Very helpful.

There's also the stuff that's been fixed from Breath of The Wild. Much more enemy variety & new bosses. But the new ability, Ultrahand, that replaces Magnesis, the ability from the first game which allowed Link to pick up and manipulate any metal object, destroys some of the fun. So much of the game is based around picking up and gluing together a large assortment of boards and objects to make rafts, bridges, aircrafts, to name a few things.

Now in theory, that sounds awesome. Being able to make whatever you want and do what you want. Except the controls are dreadful. It doesn't feel intuitive to manipulate objects around, rotating never goes the way you want it to, moving the objects in the air is awkward and the camera has a hard time keeping an eye of what you're doing often times obscuring a crucial vantage point necessary to see where the objects are. Nearly all puzzles and features of the game revolve around this feature...also early on in the game you are missing special depletable items such as fans or rockets to make your builds able to move. These are essential but getting more of these items when you finally get access to them is problematic and time consuming.

In Shrines this is where this can get quite obnoxious. In puzzle Shrines you are usually tasked with building something out of boards, iron cubes, and some of these special items such as fans or rockets or flame emitters. Building each one of these can take several minutes, and if you didn't build it right, and it falls off a cliff into the void the materials will all respawn from where you grabbed it but you will have to build it all over again. Instead of just being able to tweak it, you now have to rebuild it from scratch.

Ultrahand sucks all the fun out of this game. Nearly all side missions have to do with building something; helping little creatures called Kuroks get to their friend need to be painstakingly carried very slowly over large distances with Ultrahand. In BOTW, Magnesis was much better because it was limited in scope in what it could do. It still offered plenty of fun challenges with puzzles, but with Ultrahand the possibilities of what you COULD build, compared to a very specific design the developers demand you build and do not tell you or even hint at, makes it such a chore; especially as I mentioned earlier you can lose all your progress with your creation if it falls off a cliff.

It's a shame, because when these problems, mainly Ultrahand, aren't present the game is one of the best game worlds to explore. So much potential but Ultrahand just lets it slip through it's fingers. [pun Nintended]...

Having said all that, I still am giving the game a 4 out of 5. Why? Because what the game does right, it does exceptionally right. When the game is not being hindering with it's heavy handing of the Ultrahand ability or some other annoyance the game clicks and is one of the most immersive and addicting games I've played. Even Ultrahand has it's moments where it leads to some fantastic moments, especially in the game's Temples [akin to the dungeons of past Zelda games] as well as more curated moments. The main reason I am not giving it a 5 out of 5 is because this game has far too many annoyances, with the Ultrahand quirks and excessive size of the map at times, to be enjoyable at all times but when it is enjoyable, it is one of the best games I've played.

Where to begin with this game? Did you enjoy Breath of the Wild? Were you frustrated by certain aspects? If the answer was yes to both, you’ll love this game.

I have been a Zelda fan all the way back to playing Zelda 2 when I was 4. And when Breath of the Wild came out, I was blown away, but also frustrated by aspects of it. Yes the game did away with most of the standard Zelda formula, but enough still remained for me to enjoy it as a Zelda game. What blew me away though was the size of the game, the focus on exploration and many other things. However, many things frustrated me like how long it took to get around, warping to shrines was easy, but losing your horse was always a serious pain.

Now we arrive at the new game Tears of the Kingdom, clearly a sequel to BOTW that uses the same map, but manages to keep it fresh by introducing sky islands and the depths. And first off, if you felt BOTW had a massive map, this will blow you away. There is so much more to explore, but yet the game moves SO much faster by changing the towers from things you have to slowly climb to activate to just making them usually have a small puzzle to get them activated. Once you have these towers up, the game gets MUCH easier to navigate as each launches you miles into the sky where you can glide down toward the next closest one, or perhaps a shrine or other notable area. This eliminated the problem I had with horses and in fact, I barely used mine over the course of the entire game.

The new powers you gain at the start also open this up to a realm of creativity previously offered by other games like Minecraft, but in a Zelda game, it feels fresh. I can only say this game will feel like a dream to any engineers or someone with an interest in building. You can truly get lost in crafting weapons or vehicles, but even if only done when necessary it’s a lot of fun. I who think the shrine puzzles have gotten much harder (at least for someone like me), but they were still fun and brilliant to experience.

Finally there’s the story. I was surprised after feeling BOTW had a very forgettable story that this had a very rich and emotional story as you learn about how Ganondorf came to power and was originally defeated, as well and the truth of what happened to Zelda after the start of the game. I absolutely love it and all the characters. Honestly, the only two Zelda games to top this for me are Wind Waker and Link’s Awakening.

So yes, to sum up, this is easily one of the best Zelda games of all time and improves on BOTW so much, I can’t even see myself revisiting that game now.

In my world, Breath of the Wild is tied with Riven (I'm that old) for "greatest video game I've ever played."

So I was pre-ordered WAY in advance for Tears of the Kingdom and started playing it on day one. I've now got a few dozen hours into it and here's what I think: for me, it's a step back.

If you thought Breath of the Wild was "too confusing" and "too empty" and stuck with "not enough quests and NPCs" and "too much about puzzles and exploration and not enough about combat and activities and dungeons" then you'll love Tears of the Kingdom.

Because when reviewers are out there saying "Nintendo listened to us" what they mean is that the basic ethos of Tears of the Kingdom is very different from BotW. While Breath of the Wild was all about "you find your own way and make your own adventure as you solve the one big problem at the heart of the game, they have turned the dial several ticks toward UboSoft with Tears of the Kingdom.

This game is much more focused on "advancing the story" through NPC quests and on combat. The puzzling and exploration is far less prominent here, and much of it is cut off from you, i.e. in more traditional game fashion there are now things you can't do until you talk to NPCs and do their quests, for which you are given clear directions, and this "unlocks" new things (often yet more quests or new areas). And the puzzles are much more obvious, with many more tools to complete them. And there's a lot (a LOT) more combat required.

For me, this is a definite step backward, as I absolutely hate NPCs and NPC quests and find them to be boring and limiting and I'm far less interested in combat than in things like environmental puzzles where nothing is explained and you have to spot the fact that there *is* a puzzle, even, through careful observation.

All of that is mostly gone in ToTK. Yes, the map is very big. And I know that lots of people are excited about the fact that the world is more crowded. But that's the thing... it's more crowded with NPCs, and it feels a lot less crowded with environmental stuff. All those people who thought "Breath of the Wild is lonely and there isn't enough to do" are thrilled, I'm sure.

But in ToTK, a puzzle won't be "active" until you've done the right NPC quests to "enable" it, and then once it's active, some NPC is going to tell you that it's there to be done and also provide hints as to the solution. I hate this kind of gaming. It feels like a list of "entertainment activities" while Breath of the Wild felt like a world that you had to inhabit and make your own. *Your* own.

The example that really stands out in my mind: in Breath of the Wild, the fairy fountains weren't explained before you stumbled on one, and when you did, you only heard vaguely that there might be others around, but it wasn't made clear whether that was definitely the case, much less where exactly they were.

In ToTK, NPCs tell you about them, tell you what they do, and encourage you to seek them out before you ever encounter one. They tell you where the first one is, and how to open it, and then once you open it and talk to the fairy, she doesn't just tell you how many others there are, she literally marks them on your map so that you can go straight there, and then encourages you to go to each one. When you go to each one, you will find an NPC that tells you exactly what you need to do to open them and why, etc.

To me, this is a *big* step backward from you just stumble across them and they're a mystery, and then you wonder whether there are more, and then once you realize there are by spotting a second, you start to survey the landscape and explore to find them, and develop theories about what kinds of things they're next to.

It may sound like I hate this game. I don't, it's still miles better than UbiSoft games, which basically litter your map from the start and then beat you over the head with instructions. "Run 50m this way. Now hit button X. Now run 100m that way. Now kill the guy you've found there. Now carry this thing to the top of the kill." ToTK mercifully avoids that level of handholding (frankly, though people call it handholding, I've always felt it's more like being bossed around, which is not what I play games for).

So solid 3/5 stars. It's a good game, and better than most of what's out there. But if you thought that Breath of the Wild was utter, pure magic (and also, if you liked the original BotW far better than the modes introduced by the BotW DLC), you're probably going to have the same feelings that I do about ToTK: "this is pretty good, but it's not the absolutely pure, magical experience that BotW was."
