I have a variety of cast iron pans, ovens, and grills and use them alot. To get the most out of your grill and to be happy with your purchase you should read the instructions....The factory seasoning gets better with each use. Add extra oil in the beginning. Like all cast iron the grills yours may stick until well seasoned. The factory seasoning is not the end all. Do not use dish soap to clean etc. Like all cast iron this grill gets and stays hot so use mitts or pot holders to handle or just let it cool. I like this little grill for overnight camping trips and cooking for two at home. Lite compared to my other larger grills. The grill certainly should not come with rust but will rust if stored improperly.

I only used this item once to cook chicken. I placed a coat of olive oil due to concerns of the chicken sticking to the grill. The chicken still got stuck to the grill. When trying to clean the grill it was hard to remove. I placed dish soap for some minutes to make it easier. Once, I re-washed it. It seem to have a different appearance. Small rush spots appeared. So, i rewashed because this couldn’t have been right but it got worse. I decided to just return it. The manufacturer just gave me advice him how to properly use and wash. Luckily, amazon is very good at refunds.

New cast iron that hasn't had time to develop a well seasoned base can be a bear at first. Because there is only one layer of pre-seasoning on there, issues with sticking can occur. However, you will notice the more you use it, the better it will perform for you.

When cooking, we suggest starting on a low heat to preheat and then gradually work your way up to your desired heat setting. Since cast iron retains heat really well, you really never need to go over a med-high temperature. High temps can cause food to stick as well.

Rust forms when the cookware is exposed to moisture for extended periods of time and is not harmful in any way. To clean the pan after cooking, rinse with warm water, hand-dry, and promptly rub with cooking oil. If it soaks in water or left out to air dry, it will rust. Be sure to store the cookware in a cool, dry place, keeping it away from humidity around a sink or dishwasher.

You can restore your cookware with the steps below:

1. Scour the surface with hot, soapy water and an SOS or Brillo pad. It is okay to use soap this time because you are preparing to re-season the cookware.
2. Rinse and hand-dry thoroughly.
3. Apply a very thin, even coating of vegetable or canola oil to the cookware (inside and out). If you use too much oil, your pan may become sticky.
4. Place the cookware in the oven upside-down on the top rack.
5. Place a large baking sheet or aluminum foil on the bottom rack to catch any excess oil that may drip off the cookware.
6. Bake at 400 F for 1 hour.
7. Allow to cool and repeat as necessary to achieve the classic black patina.

This griddle works great! We were able to make pancakes on one side, and grill a couple big steaks on the other. Easy to clean. Fits well on the Coleman stove next to a 9” skillet. Will probably be a little snug with anything bigger than that.
