Clear lid. I love seeing how my fruit is doing without opening the lid.
Larger water basin.
Very sturdy and comfortable handles
Made in China
Drain is about an inch above the bottom, so you have to tip the basin to get the last of the juice out.
Made in Finland
Drain is at the bottom edge of the pan for full draining
Lid isn't clear
Handles are not comfortable
Stainless steel stained after one use
Overall the pan feels like very thin steel
They both functioned extremely well. Norpro is $40 cheaper. Norpro wins, hands down.
It takes about two hours per batch, and I had to run five batches on the pears. There's almost no work involved - we cut each pear in two, which took a few minutes, but did no other prep. The only downside is all the heat generated from that much heating/boiling/steaming - it's best done on a cool day.
This is not my first rodeo in juicing, but it's the first time I've ever tried a steam juicer and I feel like an idiot! for doing it the hard way for so long. In the past I would boil the fruit with a bit of water, then mash with a potato masher, then strain through a cheesecloth. Very slow, very messy, and less yield. I kick myself for not buying one of these steam juicers ten years ago. Better late than never!
Because this makes the juicing task so much easier I'm even considering trying some fruits I've never considered before. Like Crab Apples, and High-Bush Cranberries.
Oh my gosh, what was I missing out on? I went from spending hours and hours standing at the counter, force-feeding dozens of lbs of fruit down the throat of the extractor to putting this thing on the stove, filling it up, and mostly going on about my daily business only needing to come back and check on it now and then. And the results are clear nectar, perfect for my goal (winemaking), instead of the cloudy thick glop that would come out of the extractor. To make it even better, my stove malfunctioned, and actually melted the glass top...I was afraid this juicer was done for, but other than some very minor warping on the bottom plate it's still good to go. Very happy with my purchase.
