More Storage At Last!

Since purchasing my Xbox Series X I have struggled to accept or comprehend a 1TB SSD storage capacity, which is just not enough for regular gamers.

Lack of storage has really hampered my Xbox Series X experience as I have constantly had to remove games to be able to install new ones (I buy a lot of games). The other issue is that 96% of the time when a game that was not a X/S game gets an X/S update it will only work on the internal storage, which results on me having to uninstall the updated game entirely due to lack of space or remove another game to make way for it. It’s all been so very frustrating and until buying this additional storage I genuinely have not enjoyed my X Series experience much at all, it’s been frustrating and annoying at best.

Back in October 2022 this device had a considerable price drop, which is the ONLY reason I brought it, plus the ability to split buying it into 5 payments, to be able to afford it thanks to Amazon.

Since buying this device and installing it (very easy, I powered off my console and removed power entire, then I inserted the 2TB Seagate Expansion and powered on the X Series). I now have peace of mind using my X Series, and can finally enjoy it. I don’t have to fret about which game to remove or make constant decisions of gaming sacrifice.

I still consider this way too expensive as an upgrade, especially when Sony’s PS5 does not have the same restrictions for updated games, they can chose to play the older or newer version and are not forced to only play the latest version as us XBOX users are. In addition Sony can use different suppliers expansion memory and are not restricted to proprietary upgrade paths like in the X Series. I do not consider this product good value for money but as a necessary evil that needs to become more affordable and support larger capacities (I personally would have expected 4TB for the price I paid).

Performance wise it works great and I am very happy with it’s functionality and ease of installation.

Fast but expensive storage

Don't compare this directly to other PC NVME storage drives when comparing prices. These drives are a smaller standard of M.2 drives and are only being made by the one supplier for Microsoft so much economies of scale will mean a more expensive £ to GB of storage. For Series X/S titles that require the faster storage then this is unfortunately the only option for now. If you need more storage at a cheaper price then you can use other external SSD or HDD drives which will work fine with titles that don't require the faster internal NVME drive, and will allow you to transfer titles across when you need to. A cheap SATA SSD will be a good drive if you play lots of previous gen titles that don't require the fastest storage and the Series's consoles will be able to load the games slightly faster (but individual titles may still be limited but coding or cutscenes that can't be skipped).

Received my 2TB expansion card today.

Pros:

1. Bumps my total X/S storage up to 3TB from 1TB (1TB internal + 2TB expansion card). Allows me to store and launch Xbox Series X/S enhanced games without having to transfer them continuously between USB drives and internal storage (or having to uninstall games). I still use my USB hard drives to store my library of non-enhanced games.

2. Very very very fast read/write speeds. Mimicks internal storage performance.

3. All I needed to do was plug it in and it worked straight out of the box. It’s also hot swappable.

Cons:

PRICE. PRICE. PRICE.
This thing is CRAZY EXPENSIVE.

Was it worth it?

For me, yes. While it’s dented my wallet quite significantly it allows me to store and launch substantially more X/S enhanced games and since, going forward, newer games will also require the faster storage USB drives are gradually becoming deprecated. Their only use really is for older games. Unless you want to constantly have to move games between USB and internal (a time consuming pain in the bum) consider investing in one of these drives. They’re backed by a 3 year manufacturer warranty as well. Divide £367.59 by 36 and it works out at roughly £10 a month. And that’s not factoring in that, realistically, it’ll continue to last way past the warranty period so realistically it’s probably less.

Should you buy one?

Well that’s entirely up to you. If you’re able to afford one and don’t like having to uninstall or transfer games between slower USB drives and internal storage (which is slow because of the USB drives limited read/write speeds) then go for it. There are 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB options to suit your needs. The 2TB one, while the larger investment, actually offers the cheapest solution of the three. Effectively you’re paying less per gigabyte than with the other 2 cards.

The Seagate Expansion Card is a brilliant product with the ONLY downside being the cost.

The Xbox Series X is a superb console but with a weak point. It only comes with about 800Mb of usable internal storage. In the past that would be plenty but with modern games often needing over 100Gb, you can easily find yourself running out of space. Now add into the mix a family that all like to play different types games and a xbox Game Pass or Ultimate (which we have) and the situation soon becomes desperate.

The only way around the problem (short of deleteing games along with open familily warfare) is to go for additional storage. That just leaves the question of which storage to go for.....

Low cost - buy an external 2TB HDD and plan WAY in advance which games you want to run off the internal memory. Also get used to moving games between the internal and external storage and for that to take ages and ages and ages. If running from the external storage then some games can have reduced features.

Somewhat Expensive - buy an external 2TB SSD and plan in little bit in advance which games you want to run off the internal memory. You will still have to move games between the internal and external but at least you dont need a calander to know when it should be ready. If running from the external storage then some games can have reduced features.

Expensive or Very Expensive - buy A Seagate 1TB or 2TB Expansion card, stick it in and carry on as normal.

As the Xbox only has a ONE expansion slot I chose the 2TB card over the 1TB. The reason being is that its size gives us plenty of storage to seamlessly save, load and play all the families games without having to shuffles which ones are stored where.

Extremely overpriced for what it is, but due to limited storage on the X, it could be arguably regarded as an essential upgrade. Installation couldn't be simpler - just plug it in. No need to format it (at least I didn't have to)

Transfer rate is OK, but transferring games to an internal SSD was certainly faster on the PS5 with a 2tb Firecuda.
