I bought 4 of these in November 2018 at a very attractive price $50.95. Impossible to resist, right?
ALL 4 are now DEAD, the last one died last week. All lasted about 1700 hours or 821 days-ish.
When these drives worked, they were fast, yes very fast in throughput. But they are like bic lighters. Use them and when 1300 hours, forensically clone your soon to die Toshiba disk using a proper machine, then toss it in the garbage bin before you lose your operating system and data.
I can recommend these drives for light use, or short term use. Do not buy or use this drive if it is for your one and only laptop. This model does not have longevity or endurance under heavy loads. I find that it is marketed for gaming a little confusing, unless gaming laptops are disposable too?
In any case, I only lost about 7 files across the 4 disks in different laptops. Yes I was able to recover and transfer my data. I don't use the 'Popular' commercial operating systems or my goose would have been cooked. I can sense when a hard disk is misbehaving but that comes from years of experience. So these drives were in pre-pending crash mode. As soon as I transferred? They died, kapoof to byte heaven they went.
I have the tools and knowledge of what to do, do you as well?
If you do, okay to play 'chicken' with these drives, but if you do not? You might remember my review and cry.
While I paid little for them, in actual fact I paid a great deal if we would consider my hourly wage for the four data rescues. So these are expensive, very expensive hard disks.
My advise to Toshiba? Please sell off your data storage division, it is not worth keeping and only damages your once Spectacular name known for astonishing quality and endurance. PS My ancient Toshiba Terca 8000's circa 1999 still live and compute in 2021, though they like to hibernate a lot as most senior laptops still in existence do.
Original Review Below:
Toshiba over the years has had an excellent reputation. I still have laptops manufactured by Toshiba 20 years ago functioning and able to surf the internet in 2019 and they do if only to remind the world old does not mean recycle bin, particularly if made or commissioned by a company taking pride in their products. More over a company still willing to provide access to drivers for the operating systems of the period for ancient laptops says a lot. That is honorable. It also means money is not their only driving motivation.
Based on their previous reputation (explained above) I decided to try out their new laptop drives. These days buying a laptop drive is a lottery, quality and reliability being the main issue.
The country of manufacture for these Toshiba hard drives had a lot to do with my choice! Perhaps more important than the price I paid.
I purchased 4 drives. They have been working hard for over a month now. Lots of reads and writes. I have not experienced any issues. Toshiba advertises them for gaming and that means they need to be responsive and spinning all the time. The 128 MB cache is also attractive. Low power consumption is another plus to keep the heat down. These drives are quiet, no clicking to give you a potential heart attack or visions of data failure looming.
So far so good. I am extremely pleased. Toshiba Data Storage can be very proud of these drives.
You can use these drives in older machines, 10 years +, but note the form factor is 7mm, not 9mm or 12mm. So if you might need to buy a plastic spacer separately. Amazon sells them, just type SSD spacer.
In modern laptops the form factor should NOT be an issue, when in doubt check your existing drive. This is not a Toshiba thing, this is a 7mm height thing for any laptop hard drive. The slim design of this hard drive is one of it's selling qualities, not a negative - it also means you can someday transplant (reuse) the drive in a recent machine if your older machine gives up the ghost first.
The low power consumption is good for any laptop whether old or new.
This drive might not be well known outside of gaming circles but if it is good for them, it could be just what you need for everyday computing.
I am pretty sure the speed was under 20kb/sec the 128MB cache seems useless
And No its not my Desktop Computer my WD Black transfers a lot faster on the same port
